Supporting someone with opioid use disorder (OUD) is challenging. Caregivers, family members, and friends often need help to understand addiction, find emotional support, and access resources. The following organizations and services can provide valuable information and support.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

SAMHSA is a government organization that helps people and families affected by substance use disorders, including OUD. SAMHSA offers a free, confidential helpline as well as access to treatment locators in the United States.1

Nar-Anon family groups

Nar-Anon is a nonprofit organization that provides support for families, friends, and other support people of those living with OUD and addiction. They hold meetings and offer literature to help people cope.2

Al-Anon Family Groups

Al-Anon focuses on helping families and support people of those with substance use issues, including OUD. They provide support groups and resources to improve well-being.3

Partnership to End Addiction

Partnership to End Addiction is a nonprofit that provides tools, resources, and one-on-one support for families. Their website has educational materials and guides to help loved ones navigate recovery.4

Shatterproof

Shatterproof is a national nonprofit dedicated to ending the addiction crisis. They offer evidence-based addiction information and resources on how to find and pay for treatment. Shatterproof also hosts nationwide events to raise awareness.5

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

NIDA provides research-based information about substance use disorders. Their website includes guides and articles specifically for families, caregivers, and support people. There, you can find information on harm reduction, ways to destigmatize OUD, and where to find treatment.6

SMART Recovery Family & Friends

SMART Recovery provides science-based tools and meetings for loved ones of people with OUD. Their Family & Friends program teaches effective communication and coping strategies.7

American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)

ASAM offers a searchable directory of addiction medicine specialists. Their website offers education resources, news about addiction research, and help finding qualified healthcare providers all over the country.8

Faces & Voices of Recovery

This nonprofit organization advocates for recovery communities. They provide resources, training, and support to caregivers, families, and support people.9

The Addiction Policy Forum

The Addiction Policy Forum works to improve the lives of people with addiction and their families. They offer educational videos and family support through programs and trainings.10

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

OUD and mental health disorders often occur together. NAMI supports people and loved ones dealing with mental health and substance use issues. They offer free programs, support and education, resources, and a helpline.11

Grief Recovery After a Substance Passing (GRASP)

GRASP supports those who have lost someone to substance use. They offer in-person chapter meetings, virtual support meetings, and grief resources. You can also post an online tribute to remember a loved one who has passed.12

  • Educate yourself about OUD and recovery.
