Denial

I have a mother in law who is in denial about her opioid usage. I know her original pain management physician over medicated her with various milligrams of oxycontin which eventually landed himself in prison. She makes herself believe she was never told you can become addictive to opioids. All she wants to do is take opioids and is not willing to try other forms of treatment to help her decrease the amount of opioids she consumes. Her social behavior is causing major problems with her every day living.

  1. Hi , That sounds like a complicated and painful situation for everyone involved. It’s understandable that you’re feeling concerned. Opioid use, especially when it stems from overprescription, can be a complex and deeply personal challenge. She may be afraid of pain or change, making it harder for her to consider other options.
It's important to approach her with patience, empathy, and without judgment. Could you provide a space to ask what she fears or feels she needs? Sometimes, feeling heard and understood can be the first step toward being open to alternatives.
It’s also important to take care of yourself. You’re dealing with a challenging situation, and you deserve support too. This article provides information and resources for caring for someone with OUD and supporting yourself through this process. I hope it helps! https://opioid-use-disorder.com/family-support
How does this all sound to you?
